A new world order

Redrawing the Map

How should Norway and the Nordics position themselves in a new world order?

Norway and the Nordics have built much of their prosperity and security on an international order of open markets, stable alliances and American security guarantees – but several of these conditions can no longer be taken for granted.

This session is about how Norway, the Nordics and Europe should position themselves as security, trade, technology and industry become more tightly interwoven, as Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security and competitiveness, and as economic and demographic weight shifts to other parts of the world. For Norwegian business, this means concrete choices about markets, value chains, investments and dependencies.

We therefore want to move the conversation from what is happening in the world to what Norway and Norwegian companies are actually going to do about it – while also challenging our own perspective by exploring how the Nordics and Europe look from the outside.

Questions we explore

  • Which areas need Nordic scale to work, and where are the Nordics actually world-leading as seen from the outside?
  • Should Norway and the Nordics seek closer regional integration or stronger European anchoring?
  • What does a Europe that must increasingly stand on its own feet demand of Nordic business?
  • How should companies position themselves as trade, industrial and security policy become more tightly interwoven?
  • How will demographic and economic shifts in power change which markets and regions matter most?
  • How do the Nordics and Europe look from the outside – in a balance of power we do not define ourselves?
